Putting your 1st, 2nd and 3rd fingers in the right spots on the string.
In the overwhelming majority of tunes you will learn to play, you won't need to use your little finger. You can if you want, but you won't need to.
- This is because the note played by the little finger on the G, D or A string is the same as the adjacent open string going up.
- For example, on the D string, the pinky would play an A note, which is the same note as the A string, so instead of fingering the A on the D string, usually you would just play the note on the open A string.
This makes things pretty simple. You only have to worry about 3 fingers in the beginning, and there are some easy rules to help you understand where they go.
-
The 1st finger is placed just a little more than one inch from the nut (the little black, notched piece of wood between the peghead and the end of the fingerboard).
- The 3rd finger is placed about three inches from the nut.
- The 2nd finger come down on the string right next to where the 1st finger goes, or right next to where the 3rd finger goes.
