How To Read Tablature At fiddlehub.com
Section links: Intro Which String Which Finger Up Bow Or Down Changing Bow Direction Note Values Summary, With Slur Demo
Which finger do you use to press on the string?
In Figure 2, the four lines are back, but now some of the lines have numbers on them. Notice that all of the numbers are on the lines (or strings)--not between them. In fiddlehub tablature, the numbers are never between the lines.
Figure 2

The numbers you see on the lines represent the fingers on your left hand. If you see a "2" on the 3rd (D) string, that means you press down on the D string with your 2nd finger.
- "1" is your forefinger,
- "2" is your middle finger,
- "3" is your ring finger,
- "4" is your pinky (or it would be if you needed it to play the notes in Figure 1), and
- "0" means no finger at all. You play the string open.
