Section links: Intro Which String Which Finger Up Bow Or Down Changing Bow Direction Note Values Summary, With Slur Demo
Do you bow the note up or down?
In Figure 3, I have added another ingredient to the recipe. Below the string lines, you see some little arrows (triangles) under some of the numbers. They tell you which direction to bow the note. If the arrow points up, you bow up. If it points down, bow down.
Figure 3

To bow up, push your bow arm up toward your left shoulder. To bow down, pull your bow arm down and away from your left shoulder. (To learn exactly how to do this in a smooth and controlled way, go to the lesson on bowing.)
-
To put it another way: When you bow up, the tip of your bow goes up and to your left, toward your left ear. When you bow down, your bow tip goes down and to your right.
- Don't worry that some of the numbers in Figure 3 don't have arrows under them. We deal with that in the next section.
