Part B, Phrase 3

Bowing:
- The bowing in this phrase is the same as the bowing in Part B, Phrase 1, except for how you handle the first two notes.
- Start the phrase with an up bow. This might feel a little odd at first, but you need to be able to do it at will.
- You need to start with an up bow here because you ended the previous phrase with a long down bow, out toward the end of your stick.
- If you fall into the trap of starting every phrase with a down bow, it will really limit your options in freely interpreting a tune later on. This is a good place to get a feel for it.
- The second note is part of the opening slur, and it's on a different string. Many players avoid slurring across strings; but I think it's an essential skill. It comes up again in the very next phrase.
- In some of the other tune lessons I'll be putting up, especially in the Irish tunes section, the cross-string slur will be a central ingredient in the tune. If you're interested in that style, you really need to get a handle on this technique.
Fingering:
- The fingering in this phrase is the same as the fingering in Part B, Phrase 1.
