Part A, Phrase 3

Bowing:
- This phrase, like the last one, starts with a quick down stroke followed by a long up stroke. Remember to speed up the bow on the first stroke and slow it down on the next one.
- Notice in the video that the third note in the phrase, on the open D string, is just a little bit louder than the notes before and after it.
- There are two ways to increase volume: You can put more downward pressure on the bow, or you can increase bow speed.
- Of course, you can do both; and I'm probably doing both to make the 3rd note stand out a little when I play this tune at performance speed.
- Eventually, your musician's ear will teach your bowing arm how to do this; but I think it helps to understand exactly what's really going on.
- In the video, I draw out the last note in the phrase to give you a little more time to get ready for the loop to come around again. I think this makes it a little easier to practice the phrase. The last note is really just an 8th note, and you'll see that it only gets an 8th note value when you play all the phrases in Part A together.
Fingering:
- The fingering in this phrase is the same as in Phrase 1, except that you add the first two notes.
