Part A, Phrase 2

Bowing:
- The first three-note slur is a down stroke, covering about the middle third of the bow. The second slur is the same, in the opposite direction; but the bow speed is just a little bit slower because there isn't quite as much emphasis on the first note of this slur. You end up just below the mid-point of the bow.
- The next three notes are down, up, down--all played just above the mid-point.
- The last note is an up bow that covers the value of two 8th notes, so it needs more bow length. It will leave you about a third above the frog, and ready to start the next phrase with a down bow.
- Saw Stroke: To saw stroke this phrase, start with a down bow and just work you way along. You'll end on an up bow and be ready for a down bow to start the next phrase.
Fingering:
- Just lower the 1st finger and lift it off again to complete the first three-note slur.
- Bring the 2nd finger down on the D string to start the next slur. I don't do it in the video, but you can bring your 1st finger down at the same time (for the reasons already discussed).
- Once the second slur is completed, bring both the 1st and 2nd fingers down on the D string to play the F# (2nd finger) note. Your 1st finger will then be in place to play the last three notes in the phrase.
