Part A, Phrase 4

Bowing:
- This phrase is bowed pretty much like Part A, Phrase 2. The first slur is a down stroke, covering about the middle third of the bow. The second slur has the value of three 8th notes, so it would use about the same bow length as the first slur but for the fact that the bow speed is a little slower. You should end up just below the mid-point of the bow.
- The next three notes are down, up, down--all played just above the mid-point.
- The last note is an up bow that covers the value of two 8th notes, so it needs more bow length. It will leave you about a third above the frog, and ready to start the next phrase (whether it is A-1 or B-1) with a down bow.
- Saw Stroke: Start with a down bow and end on a down bow.
Fingering:
- This phrase is fingered very much like Part A, Phrase 2.
- When you bring your 2nd finger down on the D string, you can bring the 1st finger down as well.
- Whether you bring the two fingers down together initially or not, don't forget to leave the 1st finger down while you play the 2nd finger note for the last time. This is essential. You don't want to get into the habit of lifting the 1st finger off every time you play a note with the 2nd or 3rd finger. When it comes time to play the D string open, just lift both fingers together.
