B-1 B-2 B-3 B-4 Entire B Part Play Along Tracks
Part B, Phrase 1

Bowing:
- Start below the mid-point and speed up the bow, applying a little more downward pressure, as you slur into the second note. This will give it the emphasis it needs.
- The next two up and down notes are played above the mid-point.
- The second slur takes place entirely above the mid-point using very little bow. Neither of these two notes is emphasized.
- The next down bow is emphasized by just digging in a little and using a little more bow speed. Follow with a two-note slur that uses about the same bow length used on the preceeding down bow.
- The last note covers the value of two 8th notes, so with medium bow speed it should take you back toward the top of your stick.
The phrase starts with two short strokes, so begin close to the middle of the bow, maybe 3-4 inches below the mid-point.
- Saw Stroke: Part A, Phrase 4 ended on a down bow, so play the pick up note to start this B-1 phrase with an up bow. End on a down bow.
Fingering:
- Bring the 1st finger down to play the second note and let it rest there when you bring your 3rd finger down the play the next note.
- You could bring both the 2nd and 3rd fingers down at the same time to play the third note, but it's easier to just place the 3rd finger; and once you hear it's in tune, then squeeze the 2nd finger in behind it. If this concept is new to you, check out the lesson on fingering, and especially the section with fingering exercises.
- Leave the 2nd finger down, if only for a split second, so you can squeeze the 3rd finger up against it to play the second note in the second slur in tune.
- You'll see in the video that I pick up the 2nd finger to get a clean note with the 1st finger on the high E string, but I leave the 3rd finger in place. I'm sure I moved the 2nd finger because I brought it down in the first place a little too close to the E string and it was touching. I should have cheated more toward the D string with the 2nd finger, and then I could have left it in place on the A string, along with the 3rd finger, when I played the single note on the high E string. That would have been better practice.
- Be sure to leave the 2nd finger down when you play the last note with your 3rd finger.
