Part B, Phrase 3

Bowing:
- Start the first stroke just below the mid-point and play the first three notes in that vicinity.
- The first slur starts above the mid-point and finishes well below it.
- The first note after the slur covers the value of two 8th notes, and it is emphasized. Therefore you'll need a little more bow speed at the start of the note so it will stand out. You should end up just above the mid-point.
-
- The next note is not emphasized, and it is only an 8th note; so use very little bow length. You should end around the mid-point.
- The next to last note in the phrase is bowed like the open A string note, but it is emphasized just a shade less; so it will need a little less bow length than the A note. The last note, again, is a quick 8th note, so it needs little bow length.
- Saw Stroke: This phrase begins and ends with a down bow.
Fingering:
- Once you lift the 1st finger off the high E string, shift all your fingers to arc over the A string as you bring the 3rd finger down. This allows you to keep the spread between the 1st and 3rd fingers intact, and once the 3rd finger sounds in tune, you'll hit the following 1st finger note in tune as well.
- Once you put the 1st finger down on the A string, leave it there as y ou play the 3rd finger note.
- Leave the 2nd finger down on the D string when you play the 3rd finger note.
- Notice that in the video I play the last note in this phrase for longer than it actually lasts. Listen to the entire B part page to hear how it should sound when played in context.
